MOMBASA, Kenya — The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has invited private investors to develop and operate restaurants and a passenger lounge at Moi International Airport as part of ongoing efforts to modernise facilities and improve passenger experience at the coastal gateway.
In a notice issued Tuesday, the authority announced several investment opportunities within different sections of the airport’s terminal facilities, targeting private sector partners to establish food outlets and hospitality services for travellers.
Among the projects advertised is the development and management of a restaurant at Terminal 1 landside, a restaurant at the international departures terminal, and another food outlet at the domestic departures terminal.
KAA is also seeking an investor to develop and operate a passenger lounge within the domestic departures section, aimed at enhancing comfort and services for travellers using the airport.
PPP Strategy for Airport Upgrades
The move comes as KAA expands the use of public-private partnerships (PPP) to accelerate the modernisation of airport infrastructure across the country.
Officials say engaging private investors will help improve airport services while easing the financial burden on the state in upgrading aviation facilities.
The opportunity at Moi International Airport emerges amid rising passenger demand, with the coastal airport recording increased traffic as more international airlines explore direct flights to Mombasa.
Site Visits for Interested Investors
Interested bidders are required to attend pre-bid site visits scheduled for March 18 and March 19 at the airport to familiarise themselves with the proposed project locations and operational requirements before submitting their proposals.
The authority has set March 26, 2026, at 11 a.m. as the deadline for the submission of bids for all the tenders.
Additional Tenders Advertised
Beyond the airport development projects, KAA has also invited bids for several service contracts.
These include the supply and maintenance of executive vehicles, provision of drinking water and dispensing services, and cleaning services at the authority’s head office.
Ongoing Modernisation Works
Meanwhile, major rehabilitation and modernisation works are underway at Moi International Airport as part of a multi-phase infrastructure upgrade programme.
The current phase focuses on the rehabilitation of aircraft pavements and installation of a modern Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system, a project that broke ground in August 2025.
