NAIROBI, KENYA — The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a heavy rainfall advisory for the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, warning residents to remain vigilant as showers and isolated thunderstorms continue across the region.
The advisory is in effect until 7 pm on Monday, March 9, 2026, with the department cautioning that moderate to heavy rainfall may still trigger localized flooding.
According to KMD, while rainfall intensity has eased slightly compared to the peak period between March 4 and March 7, wet conditions are expected to persist.
“The expected rains are likely to still cause flooding as the soils are saturated from prolonged wet spells since towards the end of February,” the department said in a statement.
Areas expected to receive heavy rainfall
In Nairobi County, widespread showers are forecast over the next two days, with heavier pockets expected in several southern and central neighborhoods.
Areas likely to experience intense rainfall include Embakasi, Kibra, Makadara, Kamukunji, and parts of Roysambu, Westlands, Dagoretti, and Kasarani.
Residents in these areas, especially those in low-lying and flood-prone zones, have been advised to take precautionary measures.

Surrounding counties are also affected
The weather advisory also covers neighboring counties within the metropolitan region.
In Kiambu County, showers are expected across Gatundu, Thika, Juja, Ruiru, Limuru, Kikuyu, Kabete, and Githunguri.
Meanwhile, parts of Kajiado County—particularly the northern, western, and central areas—are forecast to receive intermittent rainfall.
In Machakos County, showers are expected in Kathiani, Machakos Town, Matungulu, Yatta, and northern parts of the county.
Safety advisory for residents
The meteorological department has urged motorists and commuters to exercise caution due to slippery roads and poor visibility during heavy downpours.
Residents have also been warned not to cross flooded roads or rivers, as water levels may rise quickly during intense rainfall.
KMD advised those living in flood-prone areas to relocate valuables to safer locations and limit unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.
Authorities also encouraged the public to stay updated with official weather advisories as conditions continue to evolve across the Nairobi metropolitan region.
