The 2025 Africa Concours d’Elegance, held on Sunday, September 28, at the Nairobi Racecourse, was a grand showcase of automotive heritage, attracting over 10,000 enthusiasts and families. Organized by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club Kenya, this 53rd edition continued its tradition of highlighting classic and vintage vehicles, offering a platform for collectors and restorers to display their prized automobiles and motorcycles.

The Concours d’Elegance is a car show competition that emphasizes the preservation and restoration of classic vehicles. Participants enter their vehicles into various classes, where they are meticulously judged based on originality, authenticity, and the quality of restoration. The event is governed by regulations approved by the Kenya Motor Sport Federation (KMSF), ensuring a standard of excellence and fairness in the judging process.

This year’s event featured a diverse array of vehicles, including 70 classic and vintage cars and 40 motorcycles. The vehicles on display spanned several decades, showcasing the evolution of automotive design and engineering. From pre-war classics to mid-century marvels, each vehicle told a story of craftsmanship and passion.

The highlight of the event was the announcement of the Best in Show winner. Sati Gata-Aura’s 1947 MG TC clinched the top honor with an impressive score of 277 points. This British roadster stood out for its exceptional condition and historical significance, earning it the admiration of judges and attendees alike.

Following closely were James Duder’s 1928 Ford Model A Pick-Up, which secured second place with 272 points, and Mike Duder’s 1930 Essex Super Six, which took third place with 258 points. These vehicles exemplified the meticulous attention to detail and dedication required in the restoration of classic automobiles.

In the motorcycle category, Dominique Antoine’s 1925 Triumph 550SD was declared the overall winner, highlighting the enduring appeal of vintage motorcycles and the skill involved in their preservation.

The Concours d’Elegance has been a staple in Kenya’s automotive calendar, thanks in large part to the vision and dedication of Bob Dewar. Under his leadership, the event evolved from a modest gathering into a premier showcase of automotive excellence. Dewar’s commitment to quality and authenticity set the standard for the Concours, ensuring its continued success and relevance.

Sadly, Bob Dewar passed away in March 2025 after a short illness, marking the end of an era for the Africa Concours d’Elegance. His legacy, however, lives on in the event’s enduring popularity and the high standards he set for vehicle preservation and restoration.

Beyond the vehicles, the Concours d’Elegance is a celebration of style and sophistication. Attendees were treated to a day filled with live music, gourmet food stalls, and fashion displays, creating a vibrant atmosphere that appealed to all senses. The event also featured a variety of family-friendly activities, ensuring that visitors of all ages could enjoy the festivities.

The fashion aspect of the event is particularly noteworthy, with attendees donning elegant attire that complements the vintage vehicles on display. This fusion of automotive and fashion showcases the cultural significance of the Concours d’Elegance, highlighting the intersection of style, heritage, and craftsmanship.

The Africa Concours d’Elegance serves as a platform for cultural exchange and community engagement. It brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds, united by a shared appreciation for automotive history and design. The event fosters a sense of community among enthusiasts, restorers, and collectors, promoting the preservation of Kenya’s automotive heritage.
