NAIROBI, Kenya – The Judiciary has called on the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to investigate allegations made by Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi, who has accused unnamed judges of corruption without filing any formal complaint.
In a statement, Judiciary spokesperson Paul Ndemo said the prominent lawyer’s persistent public attacks amounted to a smear campaign that threatens to undermine confidence in Kenya’s judicial system.
“Despite repeated calls, SC Ahmednasir has resorted to disparaging the Judiciary, its leadership and senior judges without making any formal complaint,” said Ndemo. “We are led to conclude that he does not have credible information and is simply besmirching the institution for his own undisclosed ends.”
The Judiciary maintained that it remains open to scrutiny and welcomes any credible complaint backed by evidence.
“Anyone with information about misconduct by any judge should present it to the police or relevant agencies for investigations,” Ndemo added.
The statement warned that such unsubstantiated claims — particularly from a lawyer of Ahmednasir’s stature — could erode public trust in the courts and threaten the rule of law.
“This pattern of conduct is not only unbecoming and unprofessional of a Senior Counsel, but potentially serves to erode public confidence in the Judiciary and eventually undermine the rule of law — a pillar of our constitutional democracy,” the Judiciary said.
Ndemo also highlighted the challenges faced by judicial officers and staff, noting they continue to deliver justice despite working in “extremely difficult and constrained environments.”
To safeguard the integrity of the legal profession, the Judiciary is appealing to the Law Society of Kenya and the Senior Counsel Bar to take steps to “restore the dignity of the Bar.”
