NAIROBI, Kenya – The driver of a Nairobi matatu that went viral on social media for reckless stunts has been arrested and charged, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has confirmed.
In the widely circulated video, a crew member wearing a white shirt and green reflector jacket is seen performing dangerous acrobatics on the moving vehicle—swinging from the door with his legs in the air and clinging on with one hand as the matatu makes sharp turns.
NTSA said the driver was arrested following public complaints and charged with multiple traffic offences. He was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000 or a court bond of Sh300,000.
“The stunt was reckless and extremely dangerous. Sudden braking, sharp turns, or acceleration can easily throw the passenger off balance, leading to a fatal fall,” the authority said in a statement.

Investigators said the matatu was also being driven recklessly, making sharp turns and sudden stops that could have endangered passengers’ lives.
The authority thanked members of the public for reporting the incident and urged commuters to always wear seatbelts, including conductors who often stand during rides.
