Outrage as CCTV Shows Cops Wasting Time Outside Mbagathi Hospital With Late Ojwang

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – CCTV footage from Mbagathi Hospital has revealed disturbing new details in the case of Albert Ojwang, the 31-year-old blogger who died under suspicious circumstances while in police custody.

The video, which has now gone viral, shows that police officers who brought Ojwang to the hospital in the early hours of June 8, 2025, delayed for over 20 minutes before removing him from a police vehicle, despite his apparent critical condition.

It is, however, believed Ojwang was already dead at that point.

According to the footage, a police vehicle drove into Mbagathi Hospital’s compound at 1:35 am.

Three officers are seen alighting from the vehicle, with two briefly conversing before heading toward the casualty section. At this point, Ojwang remains in the back of the van, unattended.

At 1:46 am, two officers return with a hospital stretcher. It takes them an additional 12 minutes and assistance from a hospital guard, to finally move Ojwang onto the stretcher.

By the time he was wheeled into the hospital’s emergency area at 1:58 am, 23 minutes had passed since the police arrived.

Ten minutes later, at 2:11 am, medical staff declared him dead. The officers left the hospital with Ojwang’s remains at 2:15 am.

The footage confirms earlier reports from Mbagathi Hospital staff, who said Ojwang arrived unresponsive and had sustained extensive injuries, including a swollen face and bruises on his limbs—contradicting police claims that he died after “hitting his head on a wall.”

The official police narrative has come under increased scrutiny following the emergence of these images.

A postmortem report revealed that Ojwang had been tortured before his death, prompting an internal probe that has so far led to the arrest of several officers, including OCS Samson Talaam of Central Police Station, where Ojwang was last held.

Adding another twist to the case, authorities on Friday, June 13, arrested a suspect accused of attempting to delete CCTV footage from the Central Police Station, allegedly in an effort to obstruct the investigation.

Sources familiar with the matter said the arrested individual is a technician who installed the station’s surveillance system—including 25 cameras and a digital video recorder (DVR).

He reportedly told investigators that on June 8, he was summoned to the station by a senior officer and instructed to delete footage from June 6 and 7—the period Ojwang was detained.

The new revelations have intensified public outrage and calls for accountability, especially among civil society groups and human rights defenders who say the case is a chilling reminder of systemic police brutality.
