NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has declined an offer to ride in a rally car at the upcoming 2025 World Rally Championship (WRC), a stark contrast to his enthusiastic participation in a previous edition of the race.
During a meeting at State House on Monday, rally driver Minesh Rathod extended the invitation, hoping to see the Head of State once again embrace the high-speed thrill.
However, Ruto turned it down, citing concerns raised by those close to him.
“I don’t think my friends will allow that to happen,” the President remarked. “Last time I attempted it, they really took issue with it, citing safety concerns.”
In 2022, Ruto took part in a rally car experience and later described it as an unforgettable adrenaline rush.
At the time, he marveled at the skill of the professional drivers, admitting that the sheer speed and sharp bends made for an exhilarating but nerve-wracking adventure.
“It was an absolute thrill—complete madness, but an experience you can never forget,” he had said then.
Despite opting out of the ride this year, Ruto reaffirmed his support for the WRC event, emphasizing its significance to Kenya’s sporting culture and tourism sector.
“The rally is important because it showcases Kenya as a sporting nation. It allows us to see the talent of our local drivers, brings Kenyans together for a weekend of entertainment, and attracts tourists from across the region and beyond,” he noted.
The 2025 WRC Safari Rally is set to take place from March 20 to March 23, drawing top rally drivers from around the world to Kenya’s rugged terrains.
The event remains a key highlight in the country’s sports calendar, boosting both national pride and international tourism.
