Protecting A Legacy: Hotel Managers Join Forces to Preserve Maasai Mara National Park

Date:

NAROK, Kenya – National parks play a vital role in conservation by serving as protected havens for biodiversity and ecosystems.

These designated areas act as sanctuaries where diverse flora and fauna can thrive in their natural habitats without the threat of habitat destruction or human encroachment.

It is against this backdrop that a section of hotels and lodge managers at the Maasai Mara National Park and Reserve have launched the Mara Managers Association (MMA).

The movement is aimed at bolstering the region’s tourism sector while empowering local communities and promoting wildlife and environmental conservation.

What is the Mara Managers Association commitment

Speaking to journalists in Narok County, the association’s chairman, Fairman Muhingi, emphasised the MMA’s commitment to safeguarding the Maasai Mara ecosystem.

“The association has vowed to ensure sustainable management of the vital area for those current and future generations through advocating responsible tourism practices and community engagement,” explained Muhingi.

National parks also contribute significantly to preserving endangered species, maintaining ecological balance, and safeguarding critical ecosystems.

Muhingi indicated that some of their partners had spoken about the systems they can put in place moving forward.

“Talking about rescue missions, talking about emergency response. Talking about supplies, talking about financial support,” Muhingi explained.

Why emergency services are needed in Maasai Mara

There have been several catastrophes in the park.

For example, the night of May 2, 2024, was terrifying for the unwary visitors and employees of the most opulent hotels in the Maasai Mara.

None of them anticipated being awakened late at night by the sound of rushing waters, invading their tents that had lost power and leaving them in the dark after spending the day in the woods.

All these Muhingi indicated that they are working on necessary systems to ensure that they come stronger as one to deal with such disasters.

“All we are saying is that we are committed to owning our own, and we want to make this eighth wonder of the world the best destination for our global tourism,” he added.

All we know about the Maasai Mara National Park

Beyond biodiversity conservation, these parks also offer opportunities for scientific research, environmental education, and recreation, fostering a connection between people and the natural world.

The preservation of these areas not only ensures the survival of numerous species but also contributes to the overall health and resilience of the planet.

Kenya’s well-known game reserve, the Maasai Mara, is well-known for its superb wildlife watching, particularly during the Great Migration.

Many species, including the ‘Big Five’ (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo), can be found there.

The ecosystem of the park sustains a wide variety of food and predators, resulting in a dynamic setting for safari experiences.

Millions of zebras and wildebeest cross the Mara River every year during the Great Migration, which is a popular attraction.
