NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto has convened an extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council at 10 a.m., followed by a special Cabinet session at 2:30 p.m., in response to the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in India.
According to reports from Mathrubhumi.com, an Indian news outlet, Odinga collapsed during a morning walk at around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday within the premises of an Ayurvedic hospital in Kochi, where he had been receiving treatment.
Medical staff administered CPR before he was rushed to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, where he was pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m. Indian time. He was aged 80.
A spokesperson for the Ayurvedic facility confirmed Odinga’s death, stating that the Kenyan opposition leader had been under care for rest and recovery after suffering a mild stroke in Kenya.
The hospital is the same institution where his daughter, Rosemary Odinga, previously received treatment for vision loss.
Indian authorities have reportedly notified Kenya’s diplomatic representatives and the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for formal procedures regarding the repatriation of his body.
President Ruto is expected to address the nation later today.
