NAIROBI, Kenya- CCTV footage has emerged shedding new light on the altercation involving Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai, as detectives intensify investigations into the incident.
The footage, now under analysis by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), captures the moments leading up to and during the confrontation that occurred on January 3, 2026, at a restaurant in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.
According to the timestamped video, the incident began at around 4:01 pm when Babu Owino is seen standing up from a gazebo and walking towards another section of the restaurant, where Alai was seated with a group of six men.
Initial interactions appear calm, with handshakes exchanged between the MP and members of the group.
However, approximately two minutes and 32 seconds later, the situation escalates. The footage shows Alai rising from his seat and shoving Owino, prompting a physical confrontation as the MP attempts to defend himself.
Moments later, Alai is captured drawing what appears to be a firearm and cocking it, causing panic among patrons, several of whom are seen fleeing the area.
At around 4:09 pm, a female customer approaches the two in an apparent attempt to calm the situation. The footage, however, shows Alai seemingly turning on the woman and striking her, prompting another patron to rush in and intervene.
The altercation then spills into a third gazebo area, where Alai is allegedly seen throwing an object in Owino’s direction. Shortly after, the Embakasi East MP is seen slowly leaving the restaurant through one of the exits.
Despite the footage, Alai has denied brandishing a gun or engaging in any unlawful conduct.
“There was no instance where we drew guns at each other, as alleged, or where I drew a gun at him. I do not think that is a fair analysis of the situation,” Alai said.
Babu Owino has since called on authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation, urging action to be taken in accordance with the law as detectives continue reviewing the CCTV evidence.
