Thika Affordable Housing Project Nears Completion, Promises Jobs and Urban Renewal

THIKA, Kenya — The Kings Orchid Affordable Housing Project in Thika Town is advancing steadily on schedule, delivering modern homes while spurring job creation and local economic activity, according to officials.

The development forms part of the national Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) led by the State Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Implemented under the government’s flagship housing drive, the project comprises 975 residential units across four multi-story buildings — three rising to G+14 floors and one to G+16 — including studio apartments and units with one to three bedrooms.

Amenities will include green spaces, children’s play areas, a community hall, borehole water, paved driveways, boundary security, retail and office spaces, and Wi-Fi access. Dr. Raymond Omollo highlighted that the project is not only on schedule but also creating employment opportunities and stimulating the local economy.

Project planners have emphasised its strategic location in Thika, with easy access to major transport corridors, healthcare, schools, and public institutions — positioning Kings Orchid as a residential hub for growing families and workers in the region.

The Interior and National Administration has played a facilitative role by ensuring a conducive environment for construction and timely delivery, according to Omollo’s statement. Government coordination at the local level has been critical in maintaining public order and efficient service provision during building works.

Across Kenya, the Affordable Housing Programme — a signature initiative of President William Ruto’s administration — remains a central pillar of national housing policy. Officials have reported that the programme is nearing its goal of delivering around 200,000 housing units per year, with projects underway in all 47 counties.

The programme has also driven job creation across sectors, with the government reporting hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs linked to construction activity nationwide.

Government spokespersons previously noted that more than 244,000 jobs had been created through affordable housing projects, with significant participation by youth and artisans.
