KISUMU, Kenya – Three people have died following an outbreak of acute diarrhoea disease in Kobong’o village, Nyando, Kisumu County.
The fatalities include a one-year-old baby, a 13-year-old girl, and a 27-year-old man, according to Kobong’o sub-location Assistant Chief Samuel Orage.
The first death was reported late last week, while the other two occurred on Sunday and Monday.
Chief Orage revealed that the young girl and the baby died at home, while the 27-year-old succumbed in a private hospital.
Speaking on the outbreak, Orage said all affected individuals exhibited symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea.
He noted that one woman who experienced similar symptoms received treatment and was later discharged.
The Kisumu County government has intensified efforts to curb the spread of the disease.
Assistant Chief Orage confirmed that health officials have been distributing medication and treating contaminated water points in the affected areas over the past week.
Kisumu County Health Executive Dr. Gregory Ganda confirmed the acute watery diarrhoea cases but dismissed speculation of a cholera outbreak.
“We are waiting for test results to determine the cause of the deaths. A cholera culture test takes about 24 hours, and we will provide updates once the findings are conclusive,” Dr. Ganda said.
Local authorities have urged residents to ensure proper hygiene, boil drinking water, and seek medical attention promptly if they experience any symptoms.
The county government continues to monitor the situation closely as public health teams work to prevent further infections and deaths.
