UDA Mandates New Grassroots Elections in Four Counties Amid Disputes

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced repeat grassroots elections in four counties after unresolved issues emerged from earlier party polls, underscoring the growing challenges facing political parties as they finalise internal leadership structures ahead of the next electoral cycle.

In a notice dated January 10, 2026, UDA’s National Elections Board (NEB) said the repeat elections will be conducted in parts of Samburu, Nyeri, Laikipia and Baringo counties.

The reruns are scheduled for Sunday, January 11, 2026, and will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at designated polling centres.

“The repeat exercise will involve polling centre delegates only, who are required to report to the specified polling centres to participate in the voting,” the notice stated.

According to the party, the repeat polls are limited to specific wards and constituencies where issues from earlier voting rounds were not conclusively resolved.

In Samburu County, the repeat elections will take place in Samburu North Constituency, covering Ndoto Ward and Nyiro Ward, with polling centres set at Harsim Primary School and Losirukoi Nursery, respectively.

In Nyeri County, repeat voting will be conducted in Nyeri Town Constituency, covering Kiganjo/Mathari Ward and Kamwaki/Mukaro Ward, with polling centres at Mathari Nursery and Kanoga Primary School.

Laikipia County will see a rerun in Laikipia East Constituency, specifically Nanyuki Ward, with Nturukuma Kenya Fibre designated as the polling centre.

In Baringo County, repeat elections will be held in Tiaty Constituency, covering Churo/Amaya Ward, Kolowa Ward, and Tirioko Ward, with polling centres at Kadia Center, Ayeleion Dam, and Ngeleya Primary School.

While the party did not publicly disclose the specific complaints or procedural failures that triggered the reruns, it directed all affected members and delegates to comply fully with the notice to ensure a smooth process.

The directive was signed by Anthony Mwaura, Chairperson of the UDA National Elections Board, as the ruling party moves to conclude its Phase III grassroots elections, a key process for establishing ward- and constituency-level leadership.

The repeat elections come against the backdrop of the activation of UDA’s Electoral and Nomination Dispute Resolution Committee (ENDRC), which has opened a formal channel for addressing internal electoral disputes.

In a separate notice dated January 9, 2026, the committee directed that all electoral and nomination disputes must be lodged within 24 hours of the declaration of results or nomination decisions, through the party’s official email.

The committee said the move is aimed at resolving disputes internally and strengthening the party’s electoral integrity mechanisms.

Under the Political Parties Act, parties are required to uphold democratic principles, transparent processes, and credible dispute resolution mechanisms as a condition for registration and public funding.

As UDA seeks to consolidate its grassroots base, the notice signals an attempt to address internal grievances before they escalate into prolonged disputes or litigation.

Whether the repeat elections restore confidence among affected members will be closely watched, both within the party and across the political landscape.

The outcome is expected to shape UDA’s grassroots leadership architecture as it positions itself for future by-elections and the 2027 general election cycle.
