NAIROBI, Kenya — The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has issued a show-cause notice to Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale over allegations of campaigning for a rival party’s candidate in the Malava parliamentary by-election.
In a letter dated October 9, 2025, UDA’s Disciplinary Committee accused Khalwale of “open, vocal, and substantial” support for an opposing candidate, saying his actions amounted to disloyalty and gross misconduct under the party’s constitution and code of conduct.
The notice, signed by Charles Njenga, the chairperson of the UDA Disciplinary Committee, claims the senator’s conduct demonstrated “allegiance to another political party,” contrary to the expectations of a UDA member.
“Your said participation and activities clearly demonstrate allegiance to another political party and constitute conduct unbecoming and disloyalty to the United Democratic Alliance Party,” the letter reads in part.
According to the party, Khalwale’s involvement in the campaigns directly undermined the UDA candidate contesting in Malava, a constituency in his home county.
It is only the people of Malava who can afford us a new MP
The committee has given the senator 14 days to respond to the allegations and show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.
If found culpable, the party could invoke sanctions under Articles 68 and 69 of its constitution, which provide for measures ranging from suspension to expulsion.
The notice reminds Khalwale of his obligation under Article 4 of the UDA constitution to “popularise the party, observe discipline, and comply with the decisions and positions of the party.”
Khalwale, a vocal figure in the ruling party and a key ally of President William Ruto, has in recent weeks been accused of political double-speak after appearing at rallies alongside a non-UDA candidate in Malava.
UDA’s move signals growing internal friction as the ruling party seeks to assert discipline among its members ahead of upcoming by-elections.
The senator has not publicly responded to the notice.
