Uhuru Kenyatta Donates to Support Betty Bayo’s Funeral, Pledges Help for Children

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has stepped in to support the family of the late gospel singer Betty Bayo, committing Sh 1 million toward her funeral arrangements and pledging long-term support for her children under the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation (JKF). The gesture comes at a time when the family, close friends and members of the gospel fraternity are still reeling from her sudden passing, which sent shockwaves through Kenya’s entertainment and spiritual community.

Sources close to the funeral committee confirm that Uhuru Kenyatta personally reached out to the family after learning of the funeral budget and the financial strain it had placed on Bayo’s inner circle. The committee had earlier announced that the burial preparations would require approximately Sh 5 million, owing to logistical needs, family obligations and expected attendance from notable church leaders and musicians.

The former President reportedly requested the names of the children and instructed his team to ensure they are included in the educational sponsorship programe run by the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation, one of Kenya’s longest-standing charitable institutions supporting needy students.

In the days following Betty Bayo’s death, her funeral committee has been working around the clock to coordinate fundraising efforts, manage public condolences and finalize burial logistics. Several gospel artists, including close collaborators, have been involved in mobilizing support through social media appeals.

However, the Sh 5 million budget sparked conversation among Kenyans online. Some questioned the high figure, while others defended the committee’s breakdown, noting that Bayo was a prominent public figure whose send-off was expected to attract thousands, including dignitaries and performers. The committee maintains that every expenditure will be accounted for and that transparency remains a priority.

Uhuru’s donation has eased the burden significantly, allowing the family to proceed with key arrangements without the pressure of meeting the entire budget through public harambees.

Since her passing, notable gospel artists such as Size 8, Guardian Angel, Mercy Masika and Evelyn Wanjiru have shared emotive tributes describing Bayo as a woman of kindness, humility and generosity. Church leaders echoed similar sentiments, recalling her dedication to ministry and her commitment to using music as a tool for healing and hope.

Fans have also been sharing clips of her performances, testimonies from those touched by her songs, and emotional messages honouring her legacy.

The family has also urged the public to continue supporting the funeral arrangements — not necessarily through money alone, but also through prayers, emotional support and positive remembrance of Bayo’s work.

The funeral is scheduled to take place in the coming week, with the service expected to attract hundreds of mourners from the gospel industry, various churches, and the entertainment sector.

Betty Bayo leaves behind a powerful musical legacy defined by worship, authenticity and emotional depth.
