GENEVA, Switzerland — United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has called for an independent and transparent investigation into reports of killings, arbitrary arrests, and other violations that followed Tanzania’s disputed October 29 elections.
“I am deeply concerned by reports of widespread human rights violations, including killings and enforced disappearances. These allegations must be promptly, thoroughly, and impartially investigated,” Türk said.
The UN human rights chief urged Tanzanian authorities to ensure accountability for any security officers found responsible and to guarantee the protection of fundamental freedoms.
The call comes amid mounting criticism from civil society and regional observers who described the election as “compromised” and marred by violence and suppression of dissent.
Türk reaffirmed the UN’s readiness to support Tanzania in promoting justice, reconciliation, and respect for human rights in the aftermath of the polls.
