NAIROBI, Kenya – The United States Embassy in Nairobi will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, in observance of Labor Day, a public holiday in the US dedicated to celebrating workers’ contributions.
In a public notice issued Friday, the embassy said services such as visa processing, notarial work, and passport applications would not be available on the day. It urged those seeking consular assistance to plan accordingly.
Labor Day, marked annually on the first Monday of September, is among America’s oldest public holidays, tracing back to the late 19th century when it was created to recognize the social and economic achievements of American workers.
The Nairobi closure aligns with US federal practice, where embassies and consulates worldwide suspend operations during national holidays.
The announcement was accompanied by a presidential proclamation by US President Donald Trump, who highlighted the historic role of American workers in nation-building.
“From the earliest settlers, who laid the foundations of a new Nation, to the innovators who built our railroads, steel mills, and skyscrapers, America’s greatness has always rested in the strength of its workforce,” Trump said.
He added that his administration is committed to reviving industries, creating jobs, and ensuring fair trade deals that protect American workers.
“This Labor Day, we renew our pledge to protect American jobs and defend the dignity of American labor, and we proudly acknowledge the vital role that our workers play in our past, present, and glorious American future,” the proclamation read.
The embassy will resume normal operations on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
