NAIROBI, Kenya – WhatsApp has launched its first dedicated app for Apple Watch, allowing users to read, reply, and react to messages directly from their wrist — a major step beyond simple notification mirroring from the iPhone.
The new app, now rolling out to beta users on iOS, introduces a fully interactive WhatsApp experience on Apple’s smartwatch.
For the first time, users can open chats, view message threads, listen to voice notes, and send replies using voice dictation, emojis, or preset quick responses.
Previously, Apple Watch owners could only view incoming WhatsApp notifications and send brief replies. The dedicated app transforms that limited setup into a functional wrist-based messenger.
Early testers say the app supports viewing photos and short videos directly on the Apple Watch display — an unprecedented capability for WhatsApp on wearables.
The interface presents a simplified chat list optimized for the smaller screen, ensuring smooth navigation.
While it still relies on a paired iPhone for connectivity, Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, is reportedly exploring future updates that could bring standalone functionality to cellular Apple Watch models.
For millions of WhatsApp users who rely on the app for daily communication, the update promises more freedom from their phones.
Quick message checks, short replies, and emoji reactions can now be handled seamlessly during workouts, commutes, or meetings.
Following recent expansions to tablets, web browsers, and now wearables, WhatsApp is moving closer to becoming a truly cross-platform messaging service.
The app is currently available to beta testers through Apple’s TestFlight and is expected to roll out to all iOS users in the coming weeks via a standard App Store update.
Users will need the latest versions of WhatsApp for iOS and watchOS 10 or later to access it.
