Young Scientists Kenya Urges Government-Policy Support to Advance STEM Education

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya— A call has been made for stronger collaboration between Kenya’s education sector and policymakers to scale up Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education across the country.

Speaking during the opening of the 8th National Science and Technology Exhibition in Nairobi, Young Scientists and Technology Exhibition Ireland Board Member and former Irish Ambassador to Kenya,Vincent O’Neill, emphasized the need to deepen engagement with government decision-makers.

“Lasting transformation requires a strong partnership with the government at the policy level, the key decision-makers who can drive systemic change,” said O’Neill.

“By embedding STEM promotion into national education policies, the government plays a pivotal role in training and equipping teachers with the skills and confidence to inspire the next generation.”

He praised Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) for growing from a simple idea in 2015 to a national initiative that has reached over 250,000 students in all 47 counties.

This year’s exhibition marks a milestone for YSK with the launch of a pioneering Artificial Intelligence (AI) training program aimed at empowering 300 secondary school teachers with foundational AI knowledge.

Delivered using Raspberry Pi technology, the program seeks to incorporate AI tools into classrooms and build students’ capacity for the digital economy.

“In recent years, we have seen more students embracing STEM subjects, a shift fuelled by motivated teachers who, thanks to targeted training, can now deliver STEM content more effectively,” added O’Neill.

YSK Board Chairperson Ben Roberts highlighted the long-term impact of the initiative, saying, “Seven years on, we’re seeing former participants winning innovation awards, leading tech start-ups, and shaping industries proof that investing in young minds today creates the leaders of tomorrow.”

The exhibition features student project showcases, mentorship sessions, and industry displays, and will conclude on August 9 with an awards ceremony.

Top projects stand to win scholarships, global exposure, and start-up support through a Winners’ Bootcamp.

“Great change happens when vision meets collaboration,” said Raspberry Pi Foundation Country Director Peter Wairagu.

“Our work with YSK is proof that when we combine resources, expertise, and passion, we can ignite the potential of an entire generation.”
