Dennis Ombachi: From Rugby Star to TikTok Changemaker

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Dennis Ombachi, once known for his prowess on the rugby field, has now carved out a new path as a celebrated TikTok content creator and advocate for positive change.

Recently inducted into the prestigious TikTok Change Makers Program, Ombachi is among 50 global purpose-driven creators recognized for their significant impact.

A New Chapter: From Rugby to Culinary Creativity

After an injury ended his international rugby sevens career, Ombachi reinvented himself as a self-taught chef and social media star.

With 2.3 million followers on TikTok, he leverages his platform not just for entertaining cooking videos, but also to address social issues like hunger and food insecurity in Nairobi.

His engaging and concise cooking videos have captured the hearts of viewers worldwide, making him an inspirational figure on the platform.

In 2018, Ombachi was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a challenge he turned into an opportunity.

Cooking became a therapeutic outlet for him, helping maintain his mental well-being and connecting with others through his culinary creations.

His dedication to using his platform for good did not go unnoticed, earning him the TikTok Award for Best African Content Creator in 2022.

TikTok Change Makers Program: Amplifying Voices and Impact

The TikTok Change Makers Program was established with a substantial commitment of $1.25 million (approximately Sh131 million) to support over 30 global and local non-profit organizations.

Each Changemaker, including Ombachi, receives a $25,000 (Sh3.2 million) donation to further their advocacy work.

This initiative aims to showcase the diverse voices within the TikTok community and elevate the impact of creators driving meaningful change.

Ombachi’s work extends beyond his online presence. He regularly distributes meals to underprivileged communities in Nairobi, using his influence to address food insecurity.

“We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Dennis Ombachi and TikTok to amplify children’s voices across Africa,” stated Jennifer Kaberi, CEO of a leading news agency.
