NAIROBI, Kenya – Just months after retiring from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), former CEO Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia may be returning to public service—this time in county government.
Dr. Macharia has been nominated to chair the Murang’a County Public Service Board, according to a public notice issued by the Murang’a County Assembly on June 19, 2025.
The announcement was signed by Acting Assembly Clerk Annie Macharia and outlines the vetting process required before the appointment can be formalized.
The vetting is set for Friday, June 27, at 10:00 a.m. inside the County Assembly chambers, with all nominees expected to present original academic certificates, IDs or passports, and clearance documents from KRA, HELB, EACC, the police, and CRB.
If approved, Dr. Macharia will lead the board tasked with overseeing all county human resource functions, including hiring, promotions, and disciplinary actions.
Her nomination falls under the County Governments Act and the Public Appointments (County Assemblies Approval) Act—both of which require public vetting of appointees.
It’s a new chapter for a woman who, until earlier this year, was one of the most influential figures in Kenya’s education sector.
During her nearly decade-long tenure at TSC, Dr. Macharia spearheaded the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which reshaped how education is delivered across the country.
Joining her in the nomination lineup are four others: Dr. Louis Mwende Musikali, Johnson Kang’ethe Kinyua, Dr. Brian Lishenga Makamu, and Oscar Kimani Gathura, who is slated to serve as secretary of the board.
The public has also been invited to weigh in on the suitability of the nominees.
Written submissions must be delivered to the assembly in the form of sworn affidavits by June 26—one day before the vetting session.
If Dr. Macharia’s track record at the national level is anything to go by, Murang’a could soon benefit from a seasoned administrator with a reputation for structured reforms and strict accountability. But first, she’ll have to clear the vetting process.
