Festus Amimo, Veteran KBC Journalist and Mayienga FM Head Dies

Date:

KISUMU, Kenya — Renowned Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) journalist Festus Amimo, the Head of KBC’s Dholuo station Mayienga FM, has died, sending shockwaves across Kenya’s media fraternity.

Mayienga FM announced the broadcaster’s death on Sunday, December 7, describing the loss as devastating to the station and the wider journalism community.
“It is with profound shock, deep sorrow, and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of our Head of Station, Festus Amimo,” the station said in a statement.

Amimo, who also chaired the Luo Journalists Association, was widely respected for his leadership, mentorship, and commitment to elevating vernacular journalism.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo mourned him as a dependable friend and an exemplary media professional whose humility set him apart.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend, Festus Amimo. Festus was a warm soul, a steady presence, and a true friend whose kindness and humility touched everyone around him,” Dr Omollo said.
He added that Amimo’s leadership at Mayienga FM and within the Luo Journalists Association “shaped countless voices and strengthened the profession.”

Siaya Governor James Orengo eulogised Amimo as a calm and gifted communicator whose voice had become a trusted fixture across the region.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Festus Amimo of Mayienga Radio. A calm, collected, and truly gifted soul whose loss is a heavy blow to the entire media fraternity,” Orengo said, adding that Amimo’s interviews were marked by “grace, depth, and unwavering respect.”

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi also paid tribute, calling him “a consummate and charismatic media personality” whose impact cut across the profession.

“I am devastated by the news of the untimely demise of Festus Amimo… Festus was a consummate and charismatic media man. He was a dependable ally,” Wandayi said in his condolence message.

Amimo’s death comes just weeks after the country mourned another broadcasting icon, veteran journalist and former Director of State Events Sammy Lui, who died on October 23 at his home in Subukia, Nakuru County.

Lui, who began his career at the then Voice of Kenya (VOK) before joining KTN and later the Office of the President, played a central role in national ceremonies spanning the Moi, Kibaki, and early Kenyatta administrations.

As tributes continue to flow, colleagues, listeners, and leaders describe Amimo as a towering figure in community broadcasting whose influence extended far beyond the studio. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family and Mayienga FM.
