How to Replace Your Lost Identity Card

Date:

ID cards are the most common forms of identification in Kenya and are issued to citizens at the age of 18. When you lose your ID card, you should immediately report to a police station to obtain a police abstract. A police abstract is important as it will exonerate you in case your lost ID is used in a crime.

If you find yourself in the situation of a lost ID or you need to replace a damaged ID in Kenya, you can replace them in a Huduma Centre.

Application Process in a Huduma Centre

  1. Book a Huduma appoint online and select ‘duplicate ID’
  2. Visit the Huduma Centre selected when booking the appointment to make the duplicate ID application.
  3. Carry a police abstract for the lost ID.
  4. Pay the application fee of 1000 using the provided payment options.
  5. Present the payment receipt and the police abstract to the ID replacement desk.
  6. Allow biometric information to be taken for verification. This includes a passport photo and fingerprints.

After completing this process, you will be issued with a waiting card which you must present back when collecting your new ID.

The process may take up to two weeks after which you will be notified through a text message the day on which you will collect your ID.
You can check the status of your ID online through identity.go.ke or by sending the serial number of your waiting card to SMS number 20031.
