From DJ to Digital Media Mogul: How Robert Ndung’u Built Kenyans.co.ke Into One of Kenya’s Biggest Websites

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- When Robert Ndung’u reflects on his journey, it is clear that his success was not born out of luck, but out of curiosity, courage and a deep-rooted love for Kenya.

Speaking on the Fearless Business Podcast hosted by David Sijenyi alongside Senior Pastor Muriithi Njau of Mavuno Church, the founder and Managing Director of Kenyans.co.ke traced his story back to an unlikely starting point.

A decade ago, he was known to many as Deejay Fresh, immersed in music and creative spaces. But even then, something was shifting.

“Passion just evolved to something else,” he recalled.

That evolution took him to San Francisco, where he worked as a web developer at Ogilvy Cambridge, one of the world’s leading creative agencies.

The exposure was transformative. Surrounded by cutting-edge technology and digital innovation, Robert gained skills that would later define his career.

Yet, it was also during this time that a powerful realisation struck him.

“I’ve always loved this country,” he said. “When you’re out there, that’s when it hits you, the opportunities are actually in Kenya.”

From that insight, KenyaMoja.com was born. Built while he was still in the US, KenyaMoja was designed as a smart, efficient platform for busy Kenyans.

The website aggregated Kenyan content from across the web into one easy-to-read format, displaying only headlines and links to original articles.

Content was automatically updated every few minutes or hours, ensuring users accessed the latest stories as soon as they were published.

Articles were arranged chronologically, with the newest appearing at the top, and dates clearly inserted to help users navigate content.

Beyond news, KenyaMoja also listed numerous white-collar and blue-collar job opportunities specifically for Kenyans, making it both an information and opportunity hub.

“Kenya Moja grew into something I never expected,” Robert said.

The platform would later power livestreams for KTN, KTN News and K24, at a time when digital broadcasting was still emerging in Kenya.

But Robert noticed a deeper problem.

“News was not being done in a way that people resonated with,” he explained.

That insight pushed him to make a bold move, relocating back to Kenya.

“I visualised a digital media company,” he said. “I came back, called a friend, got some office space, and started Kenyans.co.ke.”

Ten years on, Kenyans.co.ke is now the second most visited website in the country, employing more than 40 people.

Under Boxraft Limited, Robert has built a diversified digital ecosystem spanning a production house, digital agency and media company, offering strategy, documentaries, animations, TV commercials and digital video.

For Robert, business must be sustainable.

“Money is underrated. It is very important to have money,” he said.

That philosophy has enabled Boxraft to sponsor education for schools and run a three-month graduate trainee academy to upskill young talent.

Guided by faith and resilience, Robert remains forward-looking.

“People need to take AI seriously,” he warned. “AI is going to be a boom for those who understand how to use it.”
