Ruto Appoints Ahdillah Alawy as National Land Commission Chair

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto has appointed Dr. Ahdillah Saggaf Alawy as the new chairperson of the National Land Commission (NLC) for a six-year term.

The appointment was announced through a notice published in the Kenya Gazette dated March 12, 2026.

According to the gazette notice, the appointment was made under the provisions of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, specifically Article 250(2)(c), as read together with Section 7(2) of the National Land Commission Act.

The notice states that Alawy will serve as chairperson for a term of six years.

In a separate gazette notice issued the same day, President Ruto also appointed six individuals as members of the National Land Commission for similar six-year terms.

Those appointed are:

  • Susan Khakasa Oyatsi
  • Daniel Murithi Muriungi
  • Kigen Vincent Cheruiyot
  • Julie Ouma Osoko
  • Mohamed Abdi Haji Mohamed
  • Mary Yiane Seneta

The appointments complete the reconstitution of the commission, which plays a key constitutional role in managing public land on behalf of the national and county governments.

Established under Article 67 of the Constitution, the National Land Commission is mandated to oversee land administration, recommend land policy reforms, investigate historical land injustices, and advise the government on land management issues.

The commission also works alongside the Ministry of Lands and county governments in matters relating to public land allocation, land registration, and dispute resolution.

The six-year tenure granted to the chairperson and commissioners is consistent with the constitutional framework governing independent commissions in Kenya.
