NAIROBI, Kenya- Chinese tech titan Baidu has just rolled out an upgraded version of its artificial intelligence model, Ernie 4.0 Turbo, in a bold move to cement its position in China’s fiercely competitive AI market.
Baidu’s Chief Technology Officer, Wang Haifeng, announced that the new model will be available to the public via web and mobile app interfaces.
For developers, integration will be seamless through Baidu’s Qianfan AI platform.
“Ernie has already reached 300 million users since its launch,” Wang highlighted at a corporate event, underscoring the model’s widespread adoption and popularity.
In tandem with this announcement, Baidu revealed significant enhancements to its PaddlePaddle AI ecosystem.
The upgraded platform now supports a staggering 14.65 million developers and caters to 370,000 businesses and institutions, further solidifying Baidu’s dominance in the AI landscape.
Responding to OpenAI’s Market Shift
The backdrop to Baidu’s strategic moves is OpenAI’s recent decision to block access to its API from China and other countries starting July 9.
This policy shift has sent ripples through numerous Chinese startups that have been reliant on OpenAI’s technology.
In a swift and strategic response, Baidu, along with other domestic AI powerhouses like Alibaba, has launched initiatives to woo these displaced users.
They are rolling out free migration services and a slew of incentives, aiming to capture a market suddenly in need of robust AI solutions.
With these developments, Baidu is not just playing catch-up but is setting the pace in AI development.
