NAIROBI, Kenya — OpenAI has unveiled a new feature that transforms ChatGPT from a text-based chatbot into a full-fledged app platform, allowing developers to build interactive applications that run directly inside the chat interface.
The announcement, made during the company’s 2025 DevDay conference, marks a major shift in how users will interact with AI — from asking questions to taking real-world actions.
OpenAI introduced the ChatGPT Apps SDK, a development framework that lets third-party services like Canva, Booking.com, or Spotify integrate seamlessly within ChatGPT.
Users will be able to design graphics, make hotel bookings, or browse apartments without switching tabs.
“We’re moving from a tool that gives you answers to a platform that helps you act,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. “This is the beginning of ChatGPT as your digital workspace.”
Apps Inside ChatGPT
The new SDK allows developers to create mini-apps that respond to natural language in real time.
A user could type, “Find me a two-bedroom apartment in Westlands” or “Create a birthday card in Canva,” and receive an embedded, interactive response from the connected service.
Apps can appear contextually, based on the user’s query, or be launched manually. OpenAI is also preparing to launch a ChatGPT App Store, where users can browse, pin, or discover new tools.
Launch partners include Expedia, Canva, Coursera, Instacart, Klarna, Zapier, and Spotify, among others.
Beyond a Chatbot
OpenAI’s goal is to turn ChatGPT into what some industry observers call a “conversational operating system” — a space where users can multitask without juggling multiple windows or apps.
The move could reshape productivity and digital interaction globally — and locally.
In Kenya, where AI adoption is accelerating in education, design, and e-commerce, the integrated platform could simplify workflows for freelancers, teachers, and small businesses alike.
Opportunities for Developers
For developers, the Apps SDK opens the door to a global user base. Apps can include visual elements, respond to follow-up prompts, and — once payments are integrated — be monetised directly within ChatGPT.
OpenAI says app submissions are currently under review, with approved tools to roll out in the coming months.
The company also hinted at “instant checkout” features that could allow users to purchase, subscribe, or donate without leaving a conversation.
Privacy and Rollout
To address privacy concerns, OpenAI says each app will require explicit permissions — similar to mobile apps — and users will retain control over data sharing. All apps will be vetted for safety and usability before release.
For now, the feature is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Go users via the web app, with broader rollout expected later this year.
