Kabogo Takes Over ICT Ministry With A Lofty Promise: “Wealth and Job Creation”

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – William Kabogo has stepped into his new role as Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy (ICT) following a cabinet reshuffle announced by President William Ruto.

His nomination, part of the reshuffle on December 19, 2024, was confirmed after a vetting process by the National Assembly’s Committee on Appointments on January 14, 2025.

Kabogo, a former Kiambu Governor and Member of Parliament for Juja brings a strong political pedigree but little direct experience in the ICT sector.

Despite this, Kabogo is optimistic about his new role, emphasizing his administrative achievements, such as digitizing revenue collection and health systems during his governorship, as a foundation for his plans.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Kabogo expressed his commitment to driving Kenya’s digital transformation.

“This morning, I officially assumed office as the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, taking over from Acting CS, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, during a handover ceremony at the Ministry Headquarters in Nairobi. Our accelerated journey to a digitally connected Kenya starts now. This ministry is central to driving wealth and job creation, and I am committed to collaborating with the team, Cabinet colleagues, and stakeholders to achieve this vision.”

Kabogo’s agenda includes engaging Kenyan youth in responsible social media and artificial intelligence usage, a move that has already ignited discussions about potential new regulations for social media platforms in Kenya.

His vision aligns with the government’s broader strategy to harness digital technology for economic growth and employment opportunities.

The new CS faces the challenge of translating his political and administrative experience into concrete results in a rapidly evolving sector.
