NAIROBI, Kenya- Meta announced the reinstatement of former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, ending an indefinite suspension imposed after the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack.
This decision marks a pivotal moment as Trump, now a US presidential candidate, regains access to two major social media platforms.
Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts were suspended indefinitely a day after his supporters stormed the US Capitol, citing his praise for the violence on social media.
Meta’s decision to lift these restrictions comes with the belief that “the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for President on the same basis,” as stated in a blog post by the company.
The reinstatement in February 2023 came with a warning of penalties for future breaches, but these additional restrictions have now been lifted .
Meta emphasized that despite lifting the heightened suspension penalties, US presidential candidates, including Trump, will still be subject to the same Community Standards as all users.
This includes policies designed to prevent hate speech and incitement to violence. The company’s stance reflects a balance between allowing political expression and maintaining platform safety and integrity.
“In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for President on the same basis,” Meta wrote.
Although Trump’s Facebook profile, boasting 34 million followers, will now feature messages and campaign content, his primary communication channel remains Truth Social, his own social media platform.
Previously banned from Twitter and YouTube, Trump has seen these restrictions lifted, allowing him broader access to his audience.
His Facebook profile includes posts originally shared on Truth Social, rally invitations, and campaign videos, indicating an integrated approach to his social media strategy.
