Driver on the Run as Police Seize 15 Bales of Cannabis in Meru

Date:

MERU, Kenya – Police in Meru County have intercepted 15 bales of cannabis sativa in a major anti-narcotics operation along the Ruiri–Nchiru Road in Imenti North Sub-County.

The National Police Service (NPS) said officers acted on a public tip-off and intercepted an Isuzu lorry suspected of ferrying the illegal consignment.

According to the police, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled upon spotting the officers. A subsequent search revealed the drugs concealed in a secret compartment within the truck.

The officers secured the narcotics and towed the lorry to Meru Police Station as investigations and a manhunt for the suspect continue.

In a statement on X, NPS commended members of the public for their cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.

“We encourage the public to continue supporting the fight against narcotics by sharing information,” the statement read.

The seizure comes amid heightened crackdowns on illegal substances across the country.

Earlier this month, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) confiscated over 50,000 litres of illicit alcohol in Kericho County.
