MERU, Kenya – Two suspects are in police custody following a robbery incident in Meru County that led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and an abandoned getaway vehicle.
The arrests came after a National Police Reservist (NPR) reported hearing gunshots at Mungania Shopping Centre on the night of June 4 at around 8:30 p.m.
The reservist spotted a man armed with an AK-47, who dropped the weapon and fled on foot after being challenged.
A rapid response team drawn from Kathare, Subuiga, and Buuri East Police Stations was dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers found a suspicious motor vehicle abandoned near the area.
Inside the car, they recovered several personal items, including two mobile phones—and a woman believed to be part of the gang.

The female suspect was immediately arrested. A second suspect was tracked down shortly after, hiding in a nearby residence.
According to preliminary investigations, the suspects had earlier attacked a shop attendant in the area. The victim sustained minor injuries during the robbery.
Authorities confirmed that the recovered firearm and vehicle have been secured for forensic examination and further investigation.
The two suspects are expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days.
Police say efforts are underway to identify and apprehend any additional suspects who may have escaped during the incident.
