NAIROBI, Kenya – Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has been re-elected chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) after a consensus vote during a full council meeting held Monday at the CoG offices in Delta Centre, Westlands.
The meeting reaffirmed confidence in the current leadership, with Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga also retained as vice chairperson. The decision signals a vote of continuity for the team that took over the council’s leadership last year.
In a minor reshuffle, Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki was appointed as the new CoG Whip, replacing Nandi Governor Stephen Sang.
Abdullahi and his executive first assumed office in 2024, succeeding Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, who had completed her constitutionally mandated two terms as CoG chair.
The Wajir Governor has in recent months been vocal on key devolution issues, including intergovernmental relations, universal health coverage (UHC), and county budget autonomy.
Under his leadership, the council has also pushed for stronger coordination with the National Treasury and line ministries.
The re-election consolidates Abdullahi’s position as a central voice for county governments as they navigate funding delays, stalled projects, and health sector reforms.
