NAIROBI, Kenya — The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition has announced sweeping leadership changes that remove several prominent politicians from its top decision-making organs following a review of members who have taken up government roles or aligned with rival political formations.
In a statement issued Monday, coalition leader Kalonzo Musyoka said the decision was reached during a joint meeting of the Coalition Council and the National Coalition Executive Council.
“The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party today held a joint meeting of the Coalition Council and the National Coalition Executive Council and resolved that the following persons have, by virtue of their appointment to public office and/or having joined competing political coalitions, ceased to be members,” Kalonzo said.
Senior Leaders Dropped
Those removed from the Azimio Coalition Council include Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, Nominated MP Sabina Chege, Abdi Noor Omar Farah, and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.
The coalition also removed several figures from the National Coalition Executive Council, among them Cooperatives and MSMEs Development Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, Eldas MP Adan Keynan, and Pokot South MP David Pkosing.
Others affected include Likoni MP Mishi Mboko, Garissa Senator Abdul Haji, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, Isabella Wangechi Githinji, East African Community Affairs Principal Secretary Caroline Wanjiru Karugu, and Solomon Kuria.
Change in Parliamentary Leadership
The shake-up also affected the coalition’s leadership in Parliament.
Junet Mohamed was removed as the Leader of the Azimio Coalition Parliamentary Group in the National Assembly.
The coalition appointed Caroli Omondi as the new Leader of the Azimio Coalition Parliamentary Group in the National Assembly with immediate effect.
The changes signal a reorganisation within the opposition coalition as it seeks to consolidate its structures ahead of future political contests.
Kalonzo Consolidates Leadership
The announcement comes weeks after Kalonzo formally accepted his appointment as Party Leader of the Azimio coalition.
In a statement on February 3, the former Vice President thanked coalition leaders and constituent parties for entrusting him with the position.
“I graciously accept my appointment as Party Leader of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition. I thank our chairman, President Uhuru Kenyatta, the coalition leadership, and all constituent parties for this trust,” Kalonzo said at the time.
He added that the coalition remains committed to representing Kenyans who believe in justice, inclusivity, and democratic governance.
“Azimio continues to represent the hopes of millions who believe in justice, inclusivity, and a Kenya that works for everyone,” he said.
Opposition Reorganisation
Political analysts say the leadership changes reflect efforts by Azimio to streamline its ranks after several leaders from the coalition accepted positions in the government or began cooperating with rival political alliances.
Kalonzo said the coalition remains focused on offering “principled leadership focused on national renewal” while positioning itself as an alternative political force.
“This is bigger than any individual; it is about Kenya,” he said.
“I urge my fellow countrymen and women not to despair. Together, we will offer principled leadership focused on national renewal.”
