NAIROBI, Kenya- Gospel singer Betty Bayo’s mother now wants the State to open an inquest into her daughter’s death, saying too many questions remain unanswered — and the family is no longer willing to stay silent.
Bayo died on November 10, 2025, at Kenyatta National Hospital, where the family initially announced she had been receiving treatment for leukaemia. A family spokesperson, alongside her husband Hiram Gitau, told the public that she had succumbed after experiencing excessive bleeding.
But her mother, Joyce Wairimu Mbugua, now disputes that account.
The Mother’s Letter to the DPP
Through Omenke Andeje & Company Advocates, Wairimu has written to the Director of Public Prosecutions, requesting a full inquest, arguing that the circumstances around the gospel star’s death “do not add up.”
She says Bayo had never shown signs of illness and that events after her death only deepened the family’s suspicions.
Among the concerns raised:
- The family was allegedly denied access to medical records.
- They reportedly never received an autopsy report.
- The burial, she claims, was conducted hastily — a move she believes was meant to hide key details.
In the letter, Wairimu urges the DPP to direct the Inspector General to open an inquest “with speed” to establish what truly happened to her daughter, known to fans for the hit song 11th Hour.
Family Statement at the Time of Death
When announcing her passing, the family representative said doctors “tried their best” but noted that “the will of God has prevailed.”
Now, with a mother pushing for answers, the case may be heading into a fresh investigative phase — one that could determine whether Bayo’s death was a medical tragedy or something far more troubling.
