Blackout Sparks Online Fury As Kenyans Demand Answers from Kenya Power

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya’s ongoing power outages have sparked a wave of frustration and speculation among citizens, with many venting their grievances on social media.

The frequent blackouts, which many claim have increased under President Ruto’s administration, have disrupted services and caused financial losses, leaving citizens demanding accountability.

Kenyans online expressed outrage over the persistent outages, taking aim at Kenya Power and the Ministry of Energy.

Many accused the entities of incompetence and poor planning, citing a lack of prior notice about the blackouts.

“Following the revocation of the ADANI deals, Opiyo Wandayi and KPLC have allegedly decided to plunge the country into a total blackout to convince us that another shady deal is necessary. We refuse to accept this mediocrity,” read one post on X (formerly Twitter).

Adding fuel to the fire, netizens linked the blackouts to a suspicious cargo plane reportedly spotted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) during the outage.

While no evidence has emerged to substantiate these claims, the speculation underscores the growing mistrust between citizens and the authorities.

By Wednesday morning, Kenya Power announced that electricity had been restored to parts of Nairobi, South Nyanza, the North Rift, and the Mt. Kenya region.

The utility company has yet to issue a detailed explanation for the blackouts, prompting calls for greater transparency. “Would I be lying if I said that KPLC has had so many nationwide blackouts since this regime came to power?,” another X user questioned.

These outages aren’t just isolated events; they reflect a deeper strain on Kenya’s energy infrastructure. Citizens are now demanding a comprehensive review of the power grid and improvements in energy management.

The latest blackouts also follow similar issues that have plagued the country in recent months, raising questions about whether long-term solutions are being prioritized.
