NAIROBI, Kenya – Senator Samson Cherargei has urged the Kenyan government to recognize environmental activist Truphena Muthoni with the Head of State Commendation, the country’s highest civilian honour, following her record-breaking 72-hour continuous tree-hugging challenge.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Cherargei lauded Muthoni for her “act of courage, resilience, sacrifice and commitment” to environmental protection and climate change awareness.
“This act of tenacity shall not go unrewarded locally and internationally,” he wrote.
Congratulations Muthoni for the act of courage, resilience, sacrifice and commitment for better environment and climate change awareness. This act of tenacity shall not go unrewarded locally and internationally. As we celebrate the kenya’s independence day(Jahmuri day )
The 22-year-old activist completed the marathon outside the Nyeri governor’s office, pushing beyond her previous 48-hour record set earlier this year.
Muthoni described the exercise not merely as an endurance feat but as a silent protest against deforestation, a call for the protection of indigenous forests, and a statement on mental health healing through reconnecting with nature.
“The reason for hugging trees is that it’s therapeutic, and we have a lot of mental health crises across the world that are directly linked to environmental degradation,” Muthoni explained.
Over the three days, she endured heavy rains, cold nights, and physical exhaustion, maintaining her vigil without food, water, or breaks.
Fellow environmental activists supported her with a rotating playlist of music to sustain morale and energy.
Her feat attracted widespread attention, drawing support from political leaders and local officials.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua praised her efforts, saying, “Your futuristic thoughts must prick the mind of the world to reset thoughts on conservation and mental health challenges. I am with you every step of the way.”
Governor Kahiga Mutahi and Deputy Kinaniri Waroe were among the officials who witnessed the challenge, expressing pride in Muthoni’s unwavering dedication.
Senator Cherargei noted that as Kenya prepares to celebrate its Independence Day tomorrow, Muthoni joins the list of national heroes and heroines whose sacrifices contribute to a better future.
He called on the government to honour her accordingly.
“Viva Muthoni, viva Kenya,” Cherargei concluded.
