Date:

MALINDI, Kenya – A senior official at the Malindi Sub-County Development Office, Mr. Johnson Mwalimu Mwabati, has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for allegedly soliciting a Sh24,500 bribe in exchange for issuing a clearing certificate and the release of confiscated construction tools.

Mr. Mwabati is said to have demanded the bribe as part of an arrangement to assist a complainant with the paperwork required to develop his plot.

The individual, whose tools had been seized earlier, reported the incident to the EACC’s Upper Coast Regional Office.

The Commission swiftly launched an investigation and apprehended Mwabati while he was receiving the bribe.

Following the arrest, the EACC submitted the investigation file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which agreed with the Commission’s recommendation to press charges.

As a result, Mr. Mwabati was arraigned at the Malindi Law Courts today.

He faces two charges of receiving a bribe, in violation of the Anti-Bribery Act No. 47 of 2016.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mwabati was granted bail in the amount of KES 200,000 or an alternative cash bail of KES 50,000.
