NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya’s Gen Z are at the forefront of a transformative movement, shaking the foundations of governance in the country.
What began as a cry for better leadership has evolved into a full-fledged revolution, capturing the nation’s attention and sparking global conversations.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has now entered the fray, urging the youth to intensify their quest for justice and equality.
In a surprising twist, he called on his daughter, Ngina, to join the movement, a gesture seen as both symbolic and provocative.
“Fight and make sure you get what you want,” the former President said.
“Do not just sit there, there is nothing permanent.”
The movement, coined the “Gen Z Revolution,” gained momentum last year with a series of street protests in June and July 2024.
These demonstrations, characterized by their youthful energy and determination, tragically culminated in the deaths of over 60 young Kenyans.

Armed only with flags and bottles of water, the protesters became martyrs for their cause, their deaths underscoring the high stakes of the battle for change.
The June 2024 protests marked a turning point, solidifying Gen Z as a force to be reckoned with.
Their demands included the rejection of a punitive finance bill, better governance, transparency, and accountability.
“The problem with people nowadays is they are afraid. Gen Zs are the story of the future. Fight for your rights. Don’t stand and watch as your wealth is taken from you. If you do not fight for it, don’t cry if it is taken away,” the former President said.
While President William Ruto made a few changes following the protests, many of his promises remain unkept including a crackdown on corruption.
Kenyatta’s call to action has added a new dimension to the revolution.
As a former leader with deep ties to the establishment, his endorsement of the movement lends it a level of credibility and urgency that cannot be ignored.
