NAIROBI, Kenya — The family of slain teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang is now seeking State protection, citing growing fears of intimidation as investigations into his death while in police custody continue to implicate senior officers.
Speaking during a televised interview on Tuesday, the family’s lawyer, Julius Juma, raised alarm over increasing threats and unease surrounding the high-profile case.
Ojwang died on June 7 under disputed circumstances at Nairobi Central Police Station, where he had been detained after his arrest in Homa Bay.
“This is no ordinary case. It implicates top police officials. We are all feeling exposed — the family and myself — and we want security guaranteed as we push for justice,” Juma said.
The chilling concerns come just days after Police Constable James Mukwhana, arrested in connection with the case, filed a sworn statement with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) alleging that Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat ordered Ojwang’s torture.
Mukwhana further claimed that Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam directed him to execute the directive.
Ojwang had reportedly been arrested following a defamation complaint filed by DIG Lagat.
The lawyer now wants an airtight, independent investigation and has called on relevant authorities to preserve evidence and protect witnesses.
“This is a matter of national importance. There must be no cover-ups. Any external interference will erode public trust and deny the family the justice they deserve,” Juma warned.
He also revealed that President William Ruto had personally reached out to the bereaved family, offering a Sh2 million donation to assist with funeral costs and vowing that justice would be served.
Ojwang’s father, Meshack Ojwang, confirmed the President’s support and said opposition leader Raila Odinga had also sent condolences from abroad.
“I thank the President for treating my son’s case as a priority and showing solidarity with our family,” Meshack said.
Ojwang’s death has sparked national outrage, with protests erupting in Nairobi’s CBD and mounting pressure on top police bosses.
Multiple officers have since surrendered to authorities, while IPOA and the Internal Affairs Unit continue parallel investigations.
