Five Quarry Workers Killed in Suspected Al-Shabaab Attack in Mandera East

Date:

MANDERA, Kenya —Five non-local quarry workers were killed in what is believed to be a targeted attack by suspected al-Shabaab militants in Bur Abor village, Mandera East, early Tuesday morning.

The attack occurred at around 7:00 AM, when the workers were going about their duties at a local quarry.

Eyewitnesses and initial investigations point to the Somalia-based militant group as the likely perpetrators, though no group has formally claimed responsibility for the violence.

Mohamed Abdiaziz Roble, the Village Administrator of Bur Abor, confirmed the attack in an official statement.

“The identities of the victims are being confirmed, and efforts are underway to notify their families and communities,” Roble said.

The killings have sent shockwaves through the village, causing widespread fear and raising concerns about the safety of residents.

Security forces were immediately dispatched to the scene and have begun conducting investigations into the attack.

Local law enforcement is working with the village administration to strengthen security in the area.

“There is a heightened sense of insecurity in the village right now, but we are doing everything we can to ensure that justice is served and that our community is protected,” Roble added.

Authorities suspect that al-Shabaab militants were behind the attack, as the extremist group has been known to target non-local workers in the region, particularly those involved in construction and infrastructure projects.

Despite the lack of an official claim from al-Shabaab, officials have ramped up security measures in Mandera East.

Local law enforcement is working to secure the area, and the village administration has called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

“This is a deeply troubling event,” Roble said. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our community and bringing those responsible to justice.”
