NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the National Intelligence Service (NIS) of deploying agents to monitor his movements, calling it a misuse of public resources.
In a statement issued on Thursday, December 19, 2024, Gachagua claimed that an NIS officer followed him from Nairobi to Kalawa Ward in Mbooni Constituency, Makueni County, during a recent visit.
The former DP shared photos of the alleged surveillance vehicle and the officer in question, raising concerns over what he termed as unnecessary surveillance.
“National Intelligence Service, please deploy this vehicle and this officer to do some useful work to enhance our security as a nation,” Gachagua said. “It was pointless to waste fuel and man-hours having him follow us all the way from Nairobi to Makueni yesterday.”

This is not the first time Gachagua has taken aim at the NIS.
In October, he openly criticized NIS Director General Noordin Haji, defending his stance as holding public officials accountable.
He argued that such scrutiny was vital for ensuring the agency fulfills its mandate of protecting national security.
Earlier in June, Gachagua escalated his criticism, demanding Haji’s resignation over alleged intelligence failures during the unrest that followed the Finance Bill 2024.
Gachagua accused the NIS of failing to foresee and prevent widespread chaos and fatalities linked to the controversial legislation.
