NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua arrived at his new Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) party headquarters in Lavington in style, for its official unveiling on Thursday.
This comes on the back of the former DP formally resigning from the United Democratic Party (UDA) after he was ousted as Deputy President in October last year.
In a letter addressed to UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar, on Tuesday, Gachagua cited an array of issues, including UDA’s failure to adhere to the manifesto that propelled it into power in the 2022 polls.
“We promised to lift Kenyans from the bottom of the economic pyramid; this was an inclusive economic model that millions of Kenyans believed in. We signed economic charters with all the countries and various professional bodies,” read the letter in part.
“It is, however, disturbing that the Kenya Kwanza rogue Administration is still searching for these charters in their dusty shelves.”
The former DP has been on a charm offensive to galvanize support for his new party, especially in his Mount Kenya backyard, even as he races against time to assemble what he has referred to as a formidable political vehicle anchored on ousting President William Ruto from power in the 2027 general elections.
Gachagua’s new DCP party has named its members of the governing council including Thomas Ratemo, Ado Yiembo, Mably Owino, Hussein Athman, Laura Njeri, Abdifatah Abdullahi, Joy Gatugi, Jeremiah Mong’eri, Joel Sang, John Maranga, Miriam Fredina Mariki, and Brenda Banjira Omusinda.
Former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala has also been selected to deputize Gachagua while former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi will be DCP’s National Organizing Secretary.
Gachagua is seeking to popularise his party to form a coalition with Opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Martha Karua (PLP), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-Kenya), and former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, among others.
Following his impeachment and dramatic fallout with President Ruto, Gachagua has kept both political allies and opponents guessing about which political vehicle he would use in the 2027 elections.
It is not yet clear if Gachagua will vie for any position or not.
