Nairobi, Kenya- Goons riding motorbikes were spotted along Mombasa Road on Thursday afternoon, moments after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
In a video seen by Y News, the group appeared to be organized, with several men sharing motorbikes and moving in clusters along the highway.
Their sudden appearance raised eyebrows among observers, especially given the tense security atmosphere surrounding Gachagua’s homecoming.
Echoes of Past Violence
The scene bore a striking resemblance to incidents during the Gen Z protests, where goons on motorbikes infiltrated peaceful demonstrations and unleashing violence.
Activists and political commentators have long claimed that such groups operate with a degree of coordination, often surfacing during moments of heightened political activity.
Heavy Security vs. Street Tactics
Earlier, the State had deployed a heavy police presence at JKIA and key access roads to manage the charged atmosphere around Gachagua’s return.
While his convoy moved smoothly without any police interference, the emergence of the motorbike gangs highlighted the parallel street-level tactics that sometimes accompany major political events in Kenya.
Political Implications
Gachagua’s homecoming — staged after cutting short a U.S. tour — has been framed by allies as a show of political strength.
For now, the groups remained on the sidelines, but their presence served as a reminder of how quickly Kenya’s political theatrics can spill into the streets.
