Gov’t Sets Date for Moi University Reopening: “Comrades Resilience”

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The government has officially set the date for the reopening of Moi University.

The announcement was made by Principal Secretary State Department for Higher Education and Research Beatrice Inyangala.

“Moi University reopens! This is the schedule of activities leading to the reopening of Moi University. The State Department for Higher Education and Research will be at Moi University on Friday, November 8, 2024 to welcome the students back to the University. Comrades Resilience,” Inyangala posted on her official X account.

Moi University closed its Eldoret campus indefinitely on October 3, 2024, over student unrest due to industrial action by the institution’s staff and lecturers.

In a statement, the office of the Vice-Chancellor directed all students to leave the school premises with immediate effect.

“The University Senate in a Special meeting held today Thursday 3rd October, 2024 resolved to suspend the teaching and learning activities of the 1st Semester 2024/2025 Academic Year as a consequence of the industrial action of staff and subsequent student unease,” read the notice.

However, according to the programme of activities towards reopening of the university, there will be at least four consultative meetings between the university management and UASU and KUSU officials.

At least two negotiation meetings with UASU and KUSU officials.

This will culminate in the signing of RTWF with UASU and KUSU officials.

The University will thereafter reopen on Thursday, November 7, 2024, by the Senate.

Students will report back to the university the following day.
