Harambee Stars Fall to Gabon in Front of Sold-Out Nyayo Crowd

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya’s long-awaited return to a packed stadium ended in heartbreak as Harambee Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat against Gabon in their FIFA World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

Despite a spirited effort, the national team couldn’t overcome the early setback dealt by former Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who netted twice to secure victory for the visitors.

Aubameyang Shines as Gabon Secures Top Spot

Gabon wasted no time asserting dominance, with Aubameyang opening the scoring in the 16th minute.

The striker, known for his blistering pace and clinical finishing, capitalized on Kenya’s defensive lapse to put his team ahead.

Just as Harambee Stars attempted to regroup, Gabon struck again. A controversial penalty at the start of the second half saw Aubameyang coolly slot home his second goal, putting Gabon firmly in control.

Kenya’s captain Michael Olunga managed to pull one back, giving fans a glimmer of hope, but the comeback never materialized.

With this win, Gabon now leads Group F with 15 points, ahead of Ivory Coast at 13, while Kenya lingers in fourth with six.

A Historic but Disappointing Return to Home Crowds

For the first time in over six years, Harambee Stars played in a fully packed local stadium, marking a significant moment for Kenyan football.

Nyayo National Stadium was buzzing with energy as thousands of fans turned up to support the team, answering the Football Kenya Federation’s (FKF) call to “paint Nyayo red, black, and green.”

By Saturday noon, all tickets had sold out, a testament to the renewed passion for Kenyan football.

President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga were among the dignitaries in attendance, further highlighting the match’s significance.

While the defeat is a setback, Kenya still has a chance to fight for a better standing in the qualifiers.

The team will need to regroup, address defensive frailties, and capitalize on future opportunities if they hope to make an impact in the remaining fixtures.
