NAIROBI, Kenya – In a detailed statement before the National Assembly, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen provided an update on the ongoing investigation into the disappearance and tragic death of Lydia Tokeshi Bukhala, who went missing in January 2025.
Murkomen outlined the steps taken by police authorities in investigating the case, stating that the Riruta Police Station initially reported Bukhala’s disappearance, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kabete taking over the case.
On January 8, 2025, her vehicle, a white Toyota with registration number KCU 931V, was found abandoned in the Riruta area.
Forensic examination of the scene led to the collection of evidence and subsequent analysis.
On January 11, 2025, the remains of a mutilated body were discovered in Gataka Forest, and DNA analysis confirmed that the body belonged to Bukhala. The toxicology report, however, is still pending.
Murkomen also addressed the investigation into Joseph Philip Orwa, the last person seen with Ms. Bukhala on January 5, 2025.
The suspect, whose mobile phones were switched off shortly after the disappearance, was traced through his phone records, which linked him to the abandoned vehicle’s route.
CCTV footage also captured the suspect at several petrol stations on the night of January 6. Investigators are actively working to locate and arrest him.
In his statement, Murkomen highlighted the importance of forensic technology and cooperation between police stations in solving such crimes.
He reassured the family of Bukhala that the police are committed to keeping them informed and providing the necessary support as investigations continue.
The CS also reiterated the government’s commitment to swift and transparent investigations to ensure justice is served for the family and the nation.
