IPOA Investigates Kitengela Rally Death

Date:

KITENGELA, Kajiado — The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has deployed a rapid-response team to investigate the death of Vincent Ayomo, who was shot during a political rally organised by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna on 15 February 2026.

In a statement released Monday, IPOA said its inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, the role of the National Police Service (NPS), and whether the use of force was justified and proportionate under Kenyan law.

The Authority expressed condolences to Ayomo’s family and friends, while wishing a quick recovery to those injured during the rally.

IPOA assured the public that its findings would be made public, with recommendations issued to relevant authorities where police accountability is deemed necessary.

“IPOA remains committed to ensuring that police operations are transparent, professional, and in full compliance with the law,” said Vice Chairperson Ann Wanjiku Mwangi.

The Kitengela rally, which drew thousands of participants, became chaotic after police used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse crowds.
