NAIROBI, Kenya – Former International Criminal Court (ICC) suspect and ex-radio presenter Joshua Arap Sang has sparked outrage across Kenya after threatening legal action against a critic who accused him of involvement in the 2007/08 post-election violence (PEV).
Sang, who currently serves as the Director of Public Communications at the Office of the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, took to his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, December 21, to express his fury over allegations made by a user named Nyamisa Chelagat.
In his post, Sang vowed to drag Chelagat to court in January, demanding she present evidence linking him to the infamous violence that claimed over 1,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands.
He shared a screenshot of a private message he had sent Chelagat on the platform, threatening legal action: “For others to learn a lesson of wrongly accusing people, this one must meet me in court in January so that she can present the evidence she alleges I participated in the 2007/8 PEV.”
However, Chelagat, undeterred by the threat, responded publicly on X, mocking the former radio presenter and inviting him to court.
“Lol. Let’s meet in ICC. Na usiniDM till January. Niko sherehe please,” she retorted.
The exchange quickly ignited a storm of reactions from Kenyans on the platform, with many siding with Chelagat and revisiting the dark days of the 2007/08 violence.
More than 1,000 lives were lost and 600,000 others internally displaced during the violence.
The accusations against Sang, a former Kass FM radio presenter, stem from his role in allegedly inciting violence during that period through inflammatory broadcasts, a matter that led to his indictment by the ICC.
He was among 6 suspects taken to the ICC to face crimes against humanity.
Of the six, the included former President Uhuru Kenyatta and current President William Ruto.
