NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Speaker of the National Assembly, Justin Muturi, has publicly called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to cancel its contract with Smartmatic International Holdings B.V., citing concerns over potential risks to the integrity of Kenya’s elections.
In a statement released on social media, Muturi said the United Alternate Government raised formal objections with the IEBC one month ago regarding the continued engagement of Smartmatic to maintain and run the country’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He expressed frustration that, despite assurances, no action has been taken.
“This silence is not accidental. It is calculated,” Muturi warned. “The scheme is obvious: delay the cancellation of this contract long enough, then turn around and claim it is ‘too late’ to onboard a different provider. That script will not succeed.”
Muturi emphasized that the IEBC exists to safeguard the sovereign will of the people, not to serve the convenience of any regime.
He further stressed that any attempt to manipulate timelines to justify a predetermined outcome will be resisted legally, politically, and constitutionally.
“Transparency is not optional. Electoral credibility is not negotiable. Public trust is not expendable,” he stated. Muturi demanded immediate and decisive action from the IEBC, including the cancellation of the current contract and the opening of a transparent and competitive procurement process.
He warned that failure to act risks undermining confidence in Kenya’s electoral system. “Kenya will not accept electoral gamesmanship disguised as logistics. The country is watching,” Muturi concluded.
