KDF Begins Construction of New Officers’ Housing in Karen

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, on Friday officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of new Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers’ accommodation in Karen, Nairobi, marking a key step in the military’s ongoing welfare and infrastructure programme.

The project forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Defence to improve living conditions for service personnel and strengthen operational readiness through better welfare support.

During the ceremony, General Kahariri received a briefing on the project’s design, scope, and implementation plan.

Contractors informed the CDF that construction is scheduled for completion within one year, subject to adherence to approved timelines and technical standards.

Once completed, the facility is expected to improve officers’ welfare, boost morale, and enhance the overall effectiveness of the force.

KDF officials said adequate and decent housing remains a critical component of personnel welfare, particularly for officers stationed in Nairobi and its environs.

The Karen project will feature modern residential units built to contemporary standards. It will also include supporting amenities designed to provide a safe and conducive living environment for officers and their families.

Defence officials said the new facility will help ease housing pressure within the KDF, especially in high-demand urban areas.

Addressing those involved in the project, General Kahariri commended the Ministry of Defence, project managers, and contractors for the progress made so far. He urged the contractor to strictly comply with approved timelines, quality specifications, and safety requirements throughout the construction period.

He emphasised that delays, substandard work or safety lapses would not be tolerated, noting that the welfare of service personnel directly affects discipline, morale and operational performance.

“The well-being of our officers remains a priority,” the CDF said, underscoring the link between proper housing, morale and mission readiness within the armed forces.

The accommodation project is part of a wider KDF housing programme being rolled out in different parts of the country. The programme seeks to modernise military infrastructure, reduce congestion in existing facilities, and improve service delivery across the force.

Senior military commanders, officials from the Ministry of Defence, and representatives of the contracted firms attended the ceremony.

Defence officials said similar housing and infrastructure projects are at various stages of implementation nationwide, as the KDF continues to invest in long-term welfare solutions for its personnel while aligning infrastructure development with national security and defence needs.
